On the whole I find your presentation balanced - given that
artificial intelligence is to be regarded as controversial at all.
However, the insert seems to me to exaggerate the different points
of view.
The statement "What can be done should be done" is silly on
the face of it, and no-one will admit advocating it. After all we
could drop hydrogen bombs on our own cities.
A more plausible slogan for scientists would be, "What can be
known should be known" - ignoring for the moment caveats about personal
privacy. A more general issue concerns our evaluation of how well
humanity has used technology in the past. My evaluation and Weizenbaum's
about how well America has used the automobile would differ widely.
In general it is misleading to put people's positions in direct
opposition to one another. People tend to talk past each other, to
answer each other with, "Yes, but you ignore ...". Rarely do you
find people who agree on what the issues are and then disagree on
the conclusions to draw.
